Journey

Her Road to Recovery

The weeks following were filled with confusion, fear, unassuring google searches and perplexity over her own body.

Her road to recovery was anything but simple; Shirin was poked, prodded and exposed to the most toxic cancer therapies. But remission offered her another chance. Another chance to fulfill her life’s desires, to continue her passion for photography and to regain trust in her body.

However, months after she had been deemed cancer-free, Shirin noticed dark pigments appearing all over her body. Worried her cancer was making a strange recurrence, she met with an Oncodermatologist who diagnosed her with Radiation Induced Morphea (RIM). RIM is a rare side-effect that can occur months to years after being exposed to radiation. In most cases, lesions appear on the parts of the body that had been treated. In Shirin’s extremely rare case, her entire body reacted as if it had been radiated. Her shins, abdomen and lower back looked a dark, bruise-like color, and the skin felt thin enough to tear.

3 treatments

Relief & Reconnection

Treatment options to manage RIM include steroids and systemic immunosuppressants, options Shirin was not comfortable exploring. Feeling defeated by her body once again, Shirin sought after a more natural alternative.

Shirin's doctor referred her to the Avène Hydrotherapy Center, where her treatment consisted of hydrotherapy massages, scalp spray, along with simply focusing on her physical and emotional well-being.

For Shirin, Avène was not just a place to find physical relief but also a time to reconnect with her body. Through her most difficult moments, her body seemed to let her down time-and-time again, but today, Shirin is proud of the journey she's been through.

Shirin has completed two out of three treatments, and will finish the last phase of her prescription in 2019. In between treatments, she manages her skin with a regimen of Avène products.
