Understanding Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin needs gentle care. How do you know if you have sensitive skin?

The International Forum for the Study of Itch (IFSI) noted that sensitive skin experiences unpleasant sensations, i.e., it feels dry, flaky, itchy or tends to get irritated. It can easily get inflamed and may have reactions such as red rash, acne, bumps and blisters. It may also have wrinkles or a rough texture. (1)

What Causes Sensitive Skin?

Sensitive skin  is widespread - estimates suggest that >50% of people worldwide have sensitive skin. A range of issues, from pollution levels, using irritating ingredients and even genetics have created a new need for skin solutions that soothe and calm.

NEW PRODUCT can cause underlying skin sensitivity to react. Facial skin has a thin moisture barrier and more nerve endings, making it more sensitive than other body areas. This has prompted cosmetic brands to formulate products suited for sensitive skin.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS such as Eczema, Psoriasis, Contact Dermatitis, Hives, or Aquagenic Pruritus. With age, healthy skin becomes sensitive due to the changes in cell types, loss of fat under the skin, and changes in blood flow. (1)

EXTERNAL STRESSORS such as UV rays, pollutants, harsh chemicals and cosmetics, climate changes and emotional stress. Our skin health takes a toll, and the skin becomes irritated. An effective skincare routine can help us restore and rejuvenate the skin.

MASK-WEARING leads to skin inflammation and acne - or maskne. Prolonged mask use makes the face warm and humid, allowing bacteria or other pathogens to proliferate. Since this acne erupts in the mask area, people call it 'maskne,' but the scientific term is perioral dermatitis.

Cicatrization Or Skin Healing

Skin inflammation, wounds, and minor injuries are common in our modern lives. Based on the French word "cicatrisation," is the process of healing the skin and is often associated with scar tissue formation. Since scars can have undesirable physical and/or psychological effects, most people want to minimize scarring and maintain healthy skin texture.

Researchers have investigated various internal and external factors that promote wound healing. When excessive collagen deposits into the skin, scars are formed. However, internal factors such as cellular elements, soluble growth factors, and insoluble extracellular matrix (ECM) help heal (3).
